The most breathtaking leg of our trip, I can't wait to return. Cinque Terre is five tiny villages clinging on the cliffs along the coast. There are no cars; for centuries footpaths were the only way to get from place to place. And these paths come with beautiful views of the rocky coast, secluded beaches, fishing villages, vineyards on the cliffs and amazing sunsets. Italians built these homes almost 1,800 years ago to flee pirates and barbarians who could not land their boats on the rocky shores. The villages remain unchanged for centuries except for an influx of tourists in Monterosso. New development has never been allowed and the locals fish or tend to their olive gardens as daily life remains unspoiled. They don't have radio stations but I may just move there someday. My images only begin to capture the charming beauty of this place that I call my Italian home.

"Pardon me, do you have the time?" (Katydid, Microcentrum rhombifolium)

Female broadwinged katydid (Microcentrum rhombifolium), aka greater angle-winged katydid. (Males have a brown patch on the thorax for making noise.)

This was an extremely laid-back insect, calmly exploring my arm and hand, even climbing on my camera when I was doing macro shots!
